SUMMARY

Benzophenones are a class of organic compounds known for their ability to absorb and block ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Benzophenones function as UV filters and help protect skin and hair from sunburn and sun damage. Benzophenones have raised safety concerns around links to hormone disruption, especially in children and pregnant women, and environmental concerns which led to the development and use of alternative UV filters in skincare and sunscreen formulas.

ORIGIN

Benzophenones are synthetic compounds that are created through chemical synthesis that often involve reactions between various organic chemicals and are specifically designed for their ability to absorb and block ultraviolet (UV) radiation which makes them a valuable ingredient in sunscreen and cosmetic formulas.

SKIN TOLERANCE

Benzophenones, when used in sunscreen and skincare products, are generally well-tolerated on most skin, but those with sensitive skin may experience irritation or allergic reactions to these compounds, especially at higher concentrations.
