Petrolatum

SUMMARY

Petrolatum, commonly known as petroleum jelly, is a semi-solid mixture sourced from petroleum, a fossil fuel. Petrolatum is used in a wide range of skincare products like lip balms, moisturizers, ointments and creams created to provide intense hydration, protect skin's moisture barrier and soothe dry or chapped skin. It can also be found in hand and body creams, as well as in products for specific skin concerns including dry elbows, knees and heels. It's important to only use pharmaceutical-grade or highly refined petrolatum in skincare products, since these are generally free of harmful impurities.

ORIGIN

Petrolatum is sourced from petroleum, a naturally occurring fossil fuel that undergoes a refining process to create a purified and safe product for use in cosmetics and skincare. Petrolatum is not inherently toxic in skincare, but there are concerns with potential impurities that can be present in some poorly refined forms of petrolatum, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) which are considered carcinogenic and can pose health risks.

SKIN TOLERANCE

Petrolatum that’s pharmaceutical-grade or highly refined is generally well-tolerated on skin.
