SODIUM CARBONATE

Sodium carbonate, also known as soda ash or washing soda, is a white, odorless and alkaline substance that may be used in certain cosmetic and skincare products as a pH adjuster to maintain the desired pH level for product stability and effectiveness. It can be found in products like creams, lotions, cleansers and exfoliants, where precise pH control is essential for product performance. Sodium carbonate is not a common ingredient in skincare products because of its high alkalinity, which can be harsh on skin.

INCI

Sodium Carbonate

ORIGIN

Sodium carbonate is generally created through a chemical process that involves the extraction and refinement of naturally occurring sodium carbonate minerals or through synthetic methods. Natural sources of sodium carbonate include deposits of minerals like trona or natron, which are found in regions around the world, while synthetic sodium carbonate is commonly created through industrial methods.

SKIN TOLERANCE

Sodium carbonate is generally not used on skin because of its high alkaline nature that can cause irritation and potentially damage the skin's natural barrier. Its concentration in skincare formulas is limited to avoid these reactions.

SKINCARE BENEFITS

Sodium carbonate itself does not provide specific skincare benefits when applied directly to skin. But, in skincare products, its role as a pH adjuster is essential to maintain the proper pH level, which can indirectly contribute to the overall stability and effectiveness of the product.
